Grandpa's Apple Butter
The Backstory
This family recipe comes from my Grandpa Greg Gould. He originally found the recipe in a cookbook that came with the Waring blender they bought over 40 years ago. He passed it down to my mom, Summer Gould. As kids, mom and Auntie Melissa drove up with their parents Greg and Debbie (Beucus) Gould to Julian, California. Aunt Seralin and Uncle Brian Beucus, Debbie's brother, along with their kids, Aaron and Brelin, would meet them up there to buy a bushel of apples. After, they would all go to William Heise County park in Julian for a family picnic. They would make the apple butter in bulk the following day as well as some apple pies.
Now, mom and I go apple picking in Julian during the beginning of fall, usually in the month of September. We have been to several different orchards including the Volcan Valley Apple Farm, the Crosscut Farm and Orchard, as well as the Old Peacefield Orchard. Mom makes the apple butter recipe with the apples she picked, and I typically make an apple crisp with the bag of apples I picked. It's fun to honor old family traditions while also making new ones.
FYI - The apple butter makes a delicious breakfast spread on toast!
