The Trantham Surname
The Living Trantham's
Wanda Dean Trantham is the only living Trantham in our family that I know. Wanda, daughter of Edward Charles Trantham and Effie Wilma McCoy, was born January 29, 1932 in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas. She had two siblings, Ramona Jean Trantham (1929-2001) and Charles Edward Trantham (1933-1998). Wanda married James Hardin Surratt Jr on May 11, 1949 in Searcy, White County, Arkansas. They had two children Robert Joseph Surratt and Carolyn Surratt. Wanda later married William Mark Dorn. They had several children including Mark Dorn, Teresa Dorn, Dian Dorn, and Renee Dorn. Wanda's sister Ramona Jean Trantham married Ray Willard Haney on September 12, 1951 in Los Angeles, California. Wanda's brother Charles Edward Trantham married Ruth Lorene Haney on December 2, 1952 in Los Angeles, California. They had two kids, Charles Edward Trantham Jr (1955-2012) and Johnny Ray Trantham (1958-1998).
The Trantham Surname
Trantham is an English specifically Derbyshire variant of Trentham, which is an English Midlands habitational name from Trentham in Staffordshire. It is named after the river Trent meaning "the trespasser" or "the river liable to floods" and either Old English ham meaning "village" "homestead" or hamm meaning "enclosure" "water meadow".
In my genealogy research on Ancestry and FamilySearch, I traced the Tranthams to Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, and North Carolina. In the late 1600s, the Trantham line goes back to England.
