Christmas Traditions

Decorating the Christmas Tree

Summer Gould

Like many families, we decorate Christmas trees each year. Great grandma Doris Maxine (Perry) Gould Kook loved to decorate her trees with lots of tinsel. Grandma Deborah (Beucus) Gould and Grandpa Gregory Gould would make dough ornaments to hang on their tree. Mom and I put crystal ornaments on our tree that great grandpa Joseph John Kook bought for great grandma Doris.

Baking Christmas Cookies

Grandma Deborah (Beucus) Gould made all sorts of Christmas treats including wreath cookies and candy cane cookies. Mom and I would bake gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies, rice crispy treats, peppermint brownies, snickerdoodle cookies, and molasses cookies. We would bring them over for Christmas Eve at Grandma Debi and Grandpa Greg's house in Jamul.

Grandma Sandy made gingerbread and sugar cookies every year until Grandpa Bob was diagnosed with diabetes.

It's a family tradition to get Christmas pajamas each year and put them on Christmas Eve to get a family photo. For many years, Grandma Debi and Grandpa Greg gifted Auntie Melissa, my mom Summer, and me holiday jammies. Now, Mom carries on the tradition of buying us PJs. Uncle Brian and Aunt Seralin bought Christmas pajamas for their kids and grandkids. This year I even included my pugs Ally and Percy in our PJ tradition.

Watching Christmas Movies

On Christmas day, my mom and I watch our favorite Christmas movies including Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, and A Christmas Carol. I also enjoy watching fun holiday romances and Disney movies throughout December like The Princess Switch, Noelle, A Christmas Prince, Falling For Christmas, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Christmas Chronicles, and A Castle For Christmas.

Moroccan Feast

Great Grandpa Elmer Raymond Beucus served in the United States Air Force. He and his wife Fonda Doris (Magill) Beucus as well as their kids were stationed in Morocco. So it became a family tradition to eat Moroccan food on Christmas Eve because great grandma Fonda loved the spices. For many years, we would eat harira soup, lamb pinchos, and chicken couscous on Christmas Eve.

Christmas Breakfast

Seralin (Fintz) Beucus & Brian Ned Beucus

For several years, we would go over Aunt Seralin and Uncle Brian's house for Christmas brunch. There would be apple puff pancake, egg bake, ham, and latkes. And Bloody Marys for the adults. Now, my mom makes Apple puff pancake for me and egg casserole for herself Christmas morning.

Grandma Sandra Karen (Meese) Surratt made coffee cake for breakfast every Christmas.
