The Mabie Surname Meaning

There are a few possible origins including:

  1. altered form of French Mabille, a cognate of Mabile, personal name derived from Latin Amabilia, a variant of Amabilis meaning 'loveable'
  2. altered form of English Mabey from Middle English personal name Maby, a short form of Mabile Mabily, which are popular versions of the personal name Amabel
  3. original Dutch Van Naerden, an extinct variant of Van Naarden, which is a habitational name for someone from Naarden in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands
  4. Scottish English habitational name for a place in the parish of Troqueer in Kirkcudbrightshire
I traced the Mabies to New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The Mabie family line goes back to the Netherlands in the mid 1600s.
