Melissa Rachel Mabie, daughter of Levi Mabie and Elizabeth Brown, was born on 11 December 1838 in Delhi, Delaware County, New York. Melissa had many halfsiblings from both of her parents first marriages including Elijah Mabie (b. 1806), Frances Mabie (b. 1828), Roxie Emeline Scouten (b. 1826), and Ira Brown Scouten (b. 1828). In 1850, Melissa and her family lived in Sullivan, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
