The Living Surratts
My paternal grandpa, Robert "Bob" Joseph Surratt, and his sister Carol are the oldest living Surratts in our family today. Grandpa Bob, son of Wanda Dean Trantham and James Hardin Surratt Jr., was born on November 1, 1947 in Grundy, Buchanan County, Virginia. Grandpa Bob married Sandra "Sandy" Karen Meese on July 20, 1969 in San Diego, California. They had two children, my father Walter Edward Surratt and Sarah Kaye Surratt. My dad was born September 12, 1971 in San Diego, California. Aunt Sarah was born August 8, 1973 in San Diego, California. My father married Brandee Lynn England in Clark, Nevada on April 8, 1994. They had two children, my half brothers, Clayton James Surratt and Wyatt England Surratt. Clayton was born September 22, 1994 in San Diego, California. Wyatt was born October 16, 1996 in San Diego, California. Then, my dad and Brandee separated. He got together with my mom, Summer Gould. She gave birth to the awesomeness that is me on October 30, 1997 in La Mesa, San Diego County, California. Clayton James Surratt married Mary Katherine Dodge January 9, 2022 in Lakeside, San Diego County, California.
The Surname Meaning
There are four possible origins for the Surratt surname:
- Surratt is an American French variant of Sarratt. Sarratt is an altered form of French Sarot, a variant of Saraud. It is from the ancient Germanic personal name Sarwald. Sar means 'cuirass' or 'armor' and wald means 'power' or 'authority'.
- Sarratt is also an English habitational name from Sarratt, which refers to Hertfordshire, England. It's origins are little more murky, but may derive from Middle English saret, seret, or siret which mean 'dry place'.
- Another prospect is the Middle English personal name Sarre (Sara) sometimes changed to Syrett in the 18th and 19th centuries.
- And the final option of origin is another Middle English personal name Saret or Seret from Old English Saeraed. Sae means 'sea' and raed means 'counsel'.
And let me just say that diving into surnames can be confusing and complicated, but it is definitely fascinating none the less. In my genealogy research on Ancestry and FamilySearch, I have come across several different spellings for the Surratt name. Some of which were Sarratt, Sarrett, Seratt, and Sarot. The deceased Surratts in our family lived in Arkansas, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Maryland over the years. Our family line traces back to France in the 1600s according to the shared tree in FamilySearch. Both FamilySearch and WikiTree have collaborative trees that link together research from different family history hobbyists and genealogists.
