The Meese Surname
There are a few possible origins for the Meese surname:
- English habitational name from Coldmeece and Millmeece aka Staffordshire
- the river Meece Brook from Old English meos 'moss marsh bog'
- patronymic from short form of German Bartholomaus or Dutch Bartholomeus
- Dutch nickname from bird Meese 'titmouse'
- metonymic occupational name for a bird-catcher
- Americanized form of German Mies or Miess, which has two possible meanings:
- South German topographic name for someone who lived by a bog from Middle High German Mies
- South German habitational name from a place called Mies
In my genealogy research, I found several variations in spelling including Mies, Mees, Meece, and Muesse. My ancestors from the Meese line lived in Stark County, Ohio as well as Somerset County and Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In the early 1700s, the family line goes back to Germany.
