The Magill Surname

Magill is an Irish variant of McGill, which has a couple possible origins:

  1. an Anglicized form of the Gaelic Mac an Ghoill which means 'son of the stranger or lowlander'
  2. an Anglicized form of the Scottish Gaelic Mac (an) G(h)ille or the Irish Gaelic Mac (an) G(h)iolla meaning 'son of the lad'
  3. short form of a personal name from a saint in the sense of a 'devotee'
In my genealogy research, I have traced the Magill family back to Nebraska, Utah, Kansas, Massachusetts, and Oklahoma. The Magills go back to Scotland and Northern Ireland in the 1870s and 1860s.
