Interviewing Aunt Seralin
1) What values and beliefs did your parents teach you?
Seralin's parents taught her to be good, nice, and help people. They instilled the belief that you can do whatever you set out to do if you work hard for it, and the belief in God.
2) How did you meet your spouse?
She met Brian through her friend Louise. Seralin lived in Los Angeles at the time. She came down to Lakeside to visit Louise, and moved into a studio because she like the area. Louise married Charlie, and Seralin went over to their house. Louise said Brian is nice
3) Tell me about your wedding day.
Brian and Seralin got married on 16 June 1979 in Lakeside, California. Her dad's cousins from Seattle came down for the wedding. Great Grandma Doris Maxine (Perry) Gould Kook, mother of Brian's brother-in-law Gregory Gould, made the flower arrangements, gardenia headdress, and corsage. Seralin's friend Louise was her maid-of-honor. Rux, Rick, and Marc played at the wedding. My mom Summer Gould was the flower girl.
4) What was your favorite job and why?
Her favorite job was working as an occupational therapist at Grossmont Hospital. She helped paraplegics and quadriplegics with rehab, and even visited their homes.
5) What do you admire about your parents?
Seralin admires her father's strength and resilience. At age 16, her father traveled alone on a ship from the island of Rhodes to Ellis Island in America. His family including his mom and brother were supposed to follow but they died as victims of the Holocaust. Joseph had to learn English and start a new life. He joined the military and started a family. Seralin admires her mom's unconditional love seeing them through hard times. She was always supportive and proud of her kids.
6) Tell me some of your favorite songs, movies, books, etc.
One of Seralin's favorite artists is Frank Sinatra. A couple movies she loves are Pretty Woman and Miss Congeniality. Her favorite books included Power of One and books by Paul Richard Evans.
7) How did your parents meet?
Her parents Joseph and Marjorie met at art school in Los Angeles. Her dad asked her mom out for coffee.
8) Tell me about the day your first child was born.
Seralin's water broke in the middle of the night around 2am. She had to have an emergency c-section because Brelin was breach (upside down).
9) Tell me about your childhood home.
She grew up in the same house in Los Angeles. All the families in the neighborhood built their own homes up on the hill. Her home was six people to one bathroom, and Seralin didn't get her own room until age 12. It was a tight knit neighborhood community where the kids would go on their friends' family vacations and camping trips. The kids played kick the can, hide and seek, and built forts.
10) Tell me about some of the places you have been and where you were happiest.
Seralin traveled many places including parts of Europe, the Mediterranean, Hawaii, North Carolina, and Canada. She recalls the magic of a private beach in Hawaii for a week, and sailing for eight days in Canada. Visiting the island of Rhodes off the coast of Turkey is on the top of her bucket list.
With love,
